Challenge: Make Your Habits Work for You

If you’re like me, and you share a home with the kind of people who put the dirty laundry beside the basket instead of IN the basket, you know the frustrations of trying to keep systems running when not everyone is playing by the rules.

While sometimes an area in our home needs a good ol’ fashion overhaul, that doesn’t have to be the answer every time. Often what can help us more is small changes based on what we are already in the habit of doing.

As they say, we are creatures of habit—so make them work for you instead of working against them.

For example, in my home, we used to struggle to keep track of our keys, and implementing new systems didn’t seem to take very well.

I noticed we were coming home and dumping everything on the nearest clean surface- the couch, kitchen table, countertop etc.

So, I created an entryway table from a cube organizer designated for that sole purpose. I set out a glass bowl for keys, mason jars for sunglasses, along with some hand sanitizer and our masks. Then I used the cubes to store other things we use as we come and go like hats, reusable grocery bags, the dog leashes etc.

TRY THESE ENTRY WAY ORGANIZING PRODUCTS

By creating a landing pad for us to have designated space to “dump” things when our hands were full we actually made it more organized by creating a central location. Then, if we weren’t able to put it away right then, it was still always on that table and we could put things away once our hands were free.

It took some adjustments here and there, and a few more containers for all the other items we needed access to, but now we always know where the keys are along with the sunglasses, wallets, hats, headphones, and all that jazz.

Challenge— Take a look at the “problem areas” and see what habits are contributing to that area, then get creative about solutions while working with your current habits.

Maybe, like me, you need an entryway landing pad for your home.

If you already have the entry way landing pad, but struggle with getting the laundry In the basket, see what habits are already in place and make small changes to adapt to those habits. Does the basket need to be moved? Does it have a lid which is creating an extra ‘step’ for those socks to make it in the basket? Would adding a basket somewhere help?
