Over the years, we’ve created some unique home inventory systems for a number of clients. There are some great technology tools available to streamline this process. We’ve used Sortly before & there are a few others that have high user ratings. We hope this guest post from our friends at Hippo is helpful!

Get Your House In Order With A Home Inventory

Everyone knows the amazing feeling of a deeply cleaned home. The shiny surfaces, fresh smells and lack of clutter is likely the way you want things to be 24/7. But in reality, your home can’t always be this clean right?

While dust and clutter are bound to build up over time, there are steps you can take to help make your home more organized long term. Not only does home organization make it easier to find things when you need them, but it also helps improve your mental health. There are a lot of studies out there about how reducing clutter helps improve anxiety and depression, and this can be especially helpful in a time where we are all at home more often than ever before.

What is a Home Inventory?

A home inventory is a process of organizing and writing down all the items you own, including information on the value of each item and it’s purchase history. While home inventories are super beneficial for insurance purposes (after all, you want to be reimbursed for the full value of your items right?), they are also a great guideline for learning how to properly organize each room in your home.

A home inventory works by allowing you to keep track of your valuables, including where they are stored and how much you paid for them. They can be done in a variety of ways, including using a good-old-fashioned pen and paper combo. But given how easy it is to misplace or damage a physical list, it’s recommended that you make your home inventory electronically.

Home Inventory Apps

There are a variety of android and iPhone and iPad apps out there that make the home inventory process easy. Not only do they allow you to take detailed notes of each item in your home, but some can even print a QR code for each item or send your information straight to your insurance company.

Looking to use a home inventory app for more organizational purposes? These apps have plenty of category features to make customizing a breeze. You can color code by room, sort by age and even take pictures of your closets and cabinets so that you always have a reference for where everything goes. Many of these apps even have scheduling capabilities so that you can get recurring reminders on when to dust, vacuum, mop or water your plants.
