How to Approach Your Closet

Are you constantly running out of hangers? Is your closet overflowing?
It's time to give some thoughtful attention to your closet.

START HERE

  1. When was the last time I wore it?

  2. Does it have irreparable stains, holes and pulls?

  3. Do I have several other almost identical items?

  4. Does it fit me well?

  5. Do I feel confident in this?

These questions should help you distinguish between the clothes you should hold onto and the ones you can part with. Create a category of clothing to consign, donate or offer to friends. This part of the process is much less difficult to do with a trusted friend or one of our HYD organizers. A honest and helpful friend offers a perspective outside of your own, which can be really freeing.

IMPLEMENT A SYSTEM

Create zones for different categories/types of clothing. For instance: work/professional pieces, athletic gear, loungewear, outerwear, seasonal pieces, etc.

Color coordinating is a way to ensure that you can quickly find what you need, if items within each zone are grouped by color.

Invest in good hangers. They are worth it. Velvet or wooden hangers provide a seamless and orderly appearance to your closet as a whole, and keep your clothing neatly in place. Tiered hangers are a great way to maximize vertical space to hang pants. To create additional hanging capacity, use one of these.

Incorporate drawers to efficiently store folded items and accessories. Shelf dividers are another way to create division and separation between folded items on shelves.

If your closet wasn’t created with the best functionality, we recommend taking the time to think through a system that would work best for you and we can help to plan & install organizational pieces needed to update your closet.

Schedule routine closet refresh & check-ins. We recommend purging seasonally (4x a year at least).

Next steps

We've come up with a few suggestions for your well loved clothes you are ready to part with:

  • Donate - YWCA, KARM, Ladies of Charity, Goodwill, Compassion Coalition, and so many more. Contact us with questions in regards to where we suggest you donate specific items (info@helpyoudwell.com). Do a little research and donate to an organization with a mission you align with, this can make letting go more meaningful.

  • Consignment - Statemint Consignment events, Repeat Boutique, Clothes Mentor, Next To New, and Katie’s Kloset are some local options. Be sure to check websites in regards to what items consignment shops are currently accepting before you go. Always wash & ensure clothes are clean and unwrinkled before consigning.

  • Clothing Swap - grab a few of your co-workers, neighbors and friends and host your own little community clothing swap. Invite everyone to bring up to 10 items to trade with each other.
