If you dread looking in your closet—whether it’s choosing what to wear or putting away clean clothes—this fall is the perfect season to make a change!

Putting in a little time and energy now can bring you so much satisfaction the next time you go to grab your favorite white button-down or cozy cardigan. Here are four simple steps we use when working in our own closets and with our clients. You’ve got this!

1. Set a Date

Find a friend or a Help You Dwell Organizer and schedule a time to tackle your closet. Treat it like an appointment with yourself—it’s the best way to make sure it actually happens!

2. Start Small

If your wardrobe is large, begin with one category—like hanging tops, dresses, or shoes. Pull everything in that category out and pile it on the bed so you can really see what you have.

3. Sort with Intention

Pick up each item and if’s an absolute keeper - hang it back up. If not, talk through it with questions like:

  • Do I love it?

  • Does it fit well?

  • Where will I wear it?

  • Is it in good shape or too worn?

  • Am I still in the season of life to need it or wear it?

If it’s a “yes,” hang it right back up. If not, let it go!

4. Choose Your Exit Strategy

Decide how you’ll part with the pieces that no longer serve you:

  • Gift it: See if friends, family, or neighbors could use it.

  • Donate it: Support local nonprofits that provide clothing to those in need. Check out some we love!

  • Consign it: Try pop-up sales like Statemint Consignment here in East Tennessee.

Refreshing your closet isn’t just about clothes—it’s about creating a space that feels calm, inspiring, and you.
